THE UNEXPECTED RAPID ring of the doorbell jolted me from my writing.
Who would summon me to the door shortly after 9 a.m.?
I should have known, should have been on alert.
But I’d forgotten all about May Day and the tradition of depositing a basket on a doorstep, pressing the doorbell and then dashing away unseen.
As in past years, dear friends have gifted me and my husband with a treat on May 1. Magic marker floral artwork. A plastic bag of puppy chow tucked inside a brown paper bag.
While I appreciate the treat of rice cereal squares blended with peanut butter and chocolate and coated with powdered sugar, I value even more the thoughtfulness and kindness of this family.
Our friends, Tammy and Jesse, are raising their four children to be kind, caring, compassionate and loving, just like them. What a blessing this God-loving family has been in my life.
Their May Day surprise brightened an otherwise gloomy morning of grey skies dripping rain.

Great tradition. It is hard to beat treats on your doorstep.
You are right. And that puppy chow is nearly gone already.
Sweet!!! Pun intended. I love the May Day tradition and we were talking about how we don’t’ remember doing it in Ohio as kids. I do remember doing it in NC but not Ohio. Which seems strange because it seems like a “midwest” thing. Maybe we just didn’t live in the right part or something. Nice tradition and nice friends to do that for you guys.
Yes, we have the sweetest friends.
I’m just glad to see that the fun tradition is being carried on. How sweet of these neighbor kids to include you and Randy. I can still picture the 20+ kids in our culdesac running and squealing, those were such fun times…..I miss that.
Actually, these are not neighbor kids, but friends from church who live across town. Wonderful family. We “heart attacked” them on Valentine’s Day, if you remember that surprise.
Ahhhh yes i do remember that π Fun times!
Aww, I love May Day traditions. And I totally forgot about such things yesterday! But that’s okay – I was baking cookies with my granddaughter. Not a bad tradition there, either. Happy May, Audrey.
Baking cookies with Camille seems a mighty fine tradition to me.
Especially appreciated this year! Am so looking forward to “losing” this cloudiness!!!!!! I think I’m having “Cabin Fever” in May!!!! LOL!!!!!
Need I remind you that last year we had a major snowfall in May?
No reminders needed……..photos from a year ago of the 11″ of snow in Forest City, IA, reminded me very early this morning. I know, I know……..this is much better!!!!!
The sunshine did not last here too long. But at least snow is not falling, nor is it raining. So I will take the grey skies.
π
Aww, what a sweet find on your door step! While I knew it was May 1, I’d forgotten the “May Day”. Not sure why as my cousins as I used to do it when we were kids. So when my husband said “Happy May Day”, I had to think for moment of what he spoke of…lol. Yes, it was a happy May Day as I made him cookies!
What a sweet treat for your hubby.
Nice and neighborly π
They aren’t neighbors, but friends who drove across town to deliver the May Day treat. Wonderful friends at that.
