…that mark our place and in the sky, the larks still bravely singing fly, scarce heard amid the guns below…— John McCrae, May 1915
Perhaps you will hear that poem read today.
Or perhaps you will remember, like me, that “honoring the war dead” poem recited decades ago on the stage in a small town community hall.
Or perhaps you will spot the opening lines of that poem on a bulletin board, like I did on Sunday at Parkview Home in Belview. My mother, a member of a nearby Legion Auxiliary and now living at this Minnesota nursing home, pointed out the mini poster she helped created.
She was proud. Not of what she had done. But that those who have served were being remembered on this, Memorial Day.

That is sweet that your mom helped make that little poster. 🙂 I remember memorizing that poem in grade school. And I always buy a poppy during poppy days. Some things are always the same—I always look for the poppies. Good day to remember those who fought for us.
I haven’t seen anyone selling poppies here in Faribault, although I know they do. I sold poppies as a young girl and also made Poppy Day posters and read In Flanders Fields at Vesta’s annual Memorial Day program.
Such a beautiful poster and poem, so fitting for this day….Remembering those who have served and continue to serve to make this country free!
I’m remembering, too…
