ART MOVES IN A WAY sometimes that words cannot.
Today I present to you selected art that depicts the crucifixion of Christ. I discovered this collection inside St. Mary’s Catholic Church, New Trier, Minnesota.
The art ranges from simple to elaborate. I know nothing of the artists. But in viewing each of their works, I experience a wide range of emotions. And with that comes a deep sense of gratitude for those who share their faith through art.
When I toured St. Mary’s recently, I was overwhelmed by the beauty of this place, just as today I am overwhelmed by gratitude to Christ.
FYI: Please check back for future posts of my visit to St. Mary’s.

Stunning photography x
Thank you.
I am not sure most artwork could ever truly capture the gruesome death Christ suffered, nor the deep sorrow and grief Mary endured at watching her son die. Even as a child, growing up in the church and having seen many of these crucifix sculptures, I thought they appeared too soft and less severe than the image I had in my mind. I too, am overwhelmed with gratitude to Christ.
As humans, it’s likely impossible to fully understand the depths of Christ’s suffering. I believe you are right on that.
These pictures fully underline the thoughts I have been mulling over for several days. I am so blessed, but so unworthy. Redeemed and adopted into the family of God.
Returned from Good Friday worship services a few hours ago with similar feelings.
Love the idea of photographing the artwork of the crucifixion. Works great for Good Friday.
I shot these images about a month ago, remembered them and realized they would be a good fit for today.
Beautiful photo’s…was this an unlocked church????
Yes, yes, YES! Unlocked. I have more photos to post. You would love this church.
I might have to make a special trip to see this one. What day of the week was it? Weekday or weekend. It’s just so rare to have a church that isnt locked now days, such a treasure you found!
We got into this church on a Saturday afternoon. I couldn’t believe the door was open. They were redoing the floor at the front of the church, we observed. No one there, though.
Just looking at the first picture I would say that it’s a beautiful church but the details in those sculptures are breathtaking
I intend to show you more photos from inside the church. I spent a long time here and was so impressed by everything I saw. Truly a work of art.
