…but they are smart enough to realize that words mean nothing to squirrels either. And if there’s corn available, as in this front yard along Fifth Street in Faribault (across from Trinity Lutheran Church), they will partake.
My question, though, is this: How did these ducks find this food? The house is not located anywhere near a water source. Did one of them fly over, spot the corn and call the family? I can never figure out this ducks wandering away from water thing.

How do birds find bird feeders? I think they must have a second sense for food sources no matter what they are. I have always had bird feeders up and it amazes me how when I have been gone for 2 weeks and come home to empty bird feeders as soon as I fill them up the birds reappear almost immediately. Can’t explain it. But happy it happens. π
That’s a good question, too. I expect someone out there in my readership will be able to answer my question.
Great photo. I agree with your fly-over notion.
Just speculation and a wild guess on my part. I suppose I could have googled the question.
I just read a really (ridiculous….IMHO) lengthy article on the LaX Trubune page about the evolution of water creatures to land creatures (no support for this “theory” but put forth as “truth”), so, maybe, ducks “evolved” from corn and they’re just looking for their distant cousins!!!! (yeah…ok……sorry! I’m still in “reactionary” mode to the article!!!!! http://lacrossetribune.com/news/state-and-regional/blue-sky-science-how-did-animals-evolve-from-water-to/article_a4dcd4de-2241-528b-84c0-ad048f50642a.html)
OK, then…
Good reply……………..hehehe…..
Their eyesight is incredible, that’s why hunters build duck “blinds”.. lol
We’ve got a lot of humor going on here this a.m. I need humor.
Ha! I love this. We have mallards that frequently visit our backyard even though we are not near a lake or even a pond. They sometimes hang out underneath our blue spruce and look like they’re napping. And we do not put out corn for them. Sunflower seeds for everyone else with feathers, though. Sometimes the ducks hang out on our garage roof and quack loudly. Inevitably, that happens early in the morning. Better than a rooster.
Interesting. Do the mallards eat the sunflower seeds?
Nope!
LOLLLLL.
where the heck are the squirrels? xxx
The ducks must have chased them away because I didn’t see any squirrels.
Ducks like grass a lot! Out here the farmers hate ducks and geese – they will eat an entire new crop of wheat in no time flat. Perhaps these people have/had just the right kind of grass! I don’t really know why they come. I think all birds easily locate the food they desire. It’s interesting here at Daisy’s corn feeder. The squirrels and doves mostly, but other birds too, know that when Daisy or any deer come, they can pick up the dropped kernals. Along comes sneaky Ms. Foxy who knows the squirrels and birds come when Daisy is feeding, so she slinks along hoping for an easy meal! Often I will look down to see Daisy eating with the fox waiting in nearby weeds. We’ve placed feeders strategically to avoid predators but still, they are no dummies and find a way.
I knew you could offer some insights on the topic. Thank you.
Very curious indeed…silly ducks!
I suppose they’re not so silly if they’re finding food.
Typical ducks – ignoring all the rules! I have missed you Audrey and am wondering how life is for you as a new grandmother. Do give your daughter and son-in-law some love and congratulations from Sydney xx
You’re right. It does seem typical of ducks to ignore the rules.
I haven’t seen my new granddaughter now for about 2 1/2 weeks. Trying to give the new parents some space and time to rest and bond. But I’ll see Isabelle and her parents this weekend. Thank you for your warm congratulations. So sweet of you.
I wonder sometimes if they don’t have a very good sense of smell. The same happens when I put out corn or sunflower seeds on the ground, and they and the pheasants are here almost instantly.
Maybe that’s it, a strong sense of smell. I should just google this and I’d likely have the answer. But I love reading all of the speculation here.
Would have been fun to watch.
It was.
