Jackie Hemmer photographed me shooting lake scenes while on a boat ride on a lake south of Park Rapids. My husband and I were weekend cabin guests of Jackie and her husband, Rick.
WORDS TOOK ME to the northwoods of Minnesota. To a friend’s cabin. To a lake. To a book release party.
I am home now six days later, my suitcase emptied, tucked back in the closet.
But now the words and images of those days mingle memories of small towns explored, of laughter and good conversations shared, of a boat trailing waves and a loon on a lake, of wild rice hotdish and Gull Dam good beer.
Stories. There are so many stories waiting to be written.

What a fun trip! I missed that you were doing this but am thrilled to follow along on what you experienced as I am sure it is going to be simply wonderful. Love the picture of you– the photographer gets photographed. Perfection.
Our northwoods vacation, with the exception of mostly grey and rainy weather, was wonderful. You didn’t miss that I was going; I didn’t publicize this trip in advance.
Oh I don’t expect you to give me a running itinerary! I did notice your online absence but I was caught up in family stuff so didn’t really reach out. So glad it was a fun trip for you guys!
🙂
The best part of Up North is the scent of pine….it knocks you right over.
You know, I didn’t smell the jackpine. Maybe I wasn’t far enough up north. Plus, the weather did not allow for much time spent outdoors. It was the quiet I noticed most.
Audrey we have Jack Pine in our yard, I think the cold wet weather prevented the lovely scent 🙂
Yup, I knew those were jackpines, Jackie. But I didn’t realize they usually emitted a lovely scent.
Sounds like a great time
It was. I will have lots of photos and stories to share.
I love the sound of a Loon, peaceful, tranquil yet melancholy. The north woods is a magical place!
Unfortunately, this loon was silent. I have yet to hear the call of a loon.
That is great country up there, glad you had a good time up there and now are reloaded with writing material. I had many relatives in the iron mine country up for many years, my grandparents were married in Bovey, Minnesota. I still have an aunt living in Grand Rapids, she just remarried a few years ago, now age 94.
I am definitely reloaded with writing material. My one disappointment was the rainy weather which kept my camera sheltered and unusable for much of the trip.
You really have been around Minnesota, haven’t you?
Loved having you and Randy to share our little piece of heaven in the woods 🙂
And we loved spending the weekend there with you. Thanks for inviting us to your little piece of northwoods heaven. A blog post will be forthcoming soon.
I will be watching 🙂
I am aiming for Friday publication. I’ll get the cabin photos to you soon.
I have been to the northwoods a few decades back… lovely memories and such a beautiful area. I love your hair in that photo!
That’s the thing about Minnesota. We have such diverse topography from prairie to woods, lakes to rivers and more.
Thank you re. my hair style. When I broke my shoulder in May, I got a new, carefree cut.
