My way of dealing with Minnesota gloom October 16, 2009

Nothing like cheery packaging to brighten your mood.

Nothing like cheery packaging to brighten your mood.

THIS SEEMS RATHER PATHETIC. But yesterday I purchased three boxes of Kleenex® brand tissue based on the cheery packaging. No subdued decorator colors for me. Rather, I chose a box dotted with vivid hues of pink, green, yellow, orange, purple and blue. The other two boxes were imprinted with happy monkeys romping in a jungle of funky flowers.

These colors complement none of the décor in my home, except my daughters’ vacated lavender bedroom with the green closet doors. And I don’t even need tissues in that room.

So, why then, would I opt for these “look-at-me-I’m-a-Kleenex®-box” designs?

If you live in Minnesota, you would understand. For the past week, we have resided in a state of dreary gray skies, premature snowfall and cold.

I am sick of this weather. Already.

Give me sunshine and warmth, not clouds and freezing temperatures. My mood seems to match the weather, and that worries me. Months of cold and snow and gloom loom ahead. Five months more of this stuff, minimum, I figure.

Not everyone, I realize, feels as I do. Take the guy I saw jogging last night, in the dark, at 7:45, dressed in shorts and a T-shirt in 35-degree temperatures. Was he crazy? I thought so.

Or am I the crazy one, buying boxes of brightly-colored Kleenex® brand tissues to lift my spirits?

That monkey Kleenex box is really cute!

Yeah, I thought the monkeys were cute too. I always wanted a pet monkey as a kid, so maybe subconsciously that’s why I chose it and not simply because the design cheered me. Should I save a monkey box for you?

Where did you buy them? They are really cute, and you are right, the boxes are very cheerful!

Tammy–I got the tissues at Nelson’s Market Place in Faribault and they were even on sale. I always love a good deal. But I bet you can find these wherever Kleenex brand tissues are sold.

Curtis’ article touched the heart of many people. I would ask for everyone to take a moment of silence and pray for his family. The pain of losing a child is unbearable, but only one can heal it. This one is Jesus Christ who heals us in the most difficult time in our life. In this moment Curtis is right next to our heavenly father Jesus Christ rejoicing, and the angels in heaven are delighted to have added one more angel in their group. The light of this new angel will be reflecting in each one of our hearts giving us hope and joy for a new day. I haven’t met you Curtis, but by what I read about you, you will be missed and Thank you for existing and being this such a wonderful active Christian who loved the Lord and your family with all your heart, showing us that you weren’t just one more in this planet , you added happiness into people’s life who surrounded you.
Jesus bless your soul and you will delight in his glory !!!

Eliane and Perry: Thank you for taking the time to share your heartfelt words of hope with the readers of Minnesota Prairie Roots. Readers, please refer to my post, “God gave us tears for a reason.” This comment is directed to that post, which shares the story of 12-year-old Curtis Collin Holter. He tragically lost his life on Sept. 30. Curtis was/is a child of God, a consolation to all who loved him.
