WITH THE WEATHER HOT as Hades, nothing beats an ice cream treat.
And it’s especially delicious served with a scoop of nostalgia, like that offered at The Whippy Dip in Decorah, Iowa. Don’t you just love that name? Whippy. Dip.
On a recent stop at this popular walk-up/drive-up ice cream/fast food stand, my husband waited in line to order a chocolate twist cone for me and a blueberry sundae for himself while I snapped a few photos.
I was impressed with the generous size of the $1.50 small cone, but soon realized my error in choosing a cone on a hot day. Picture chocolate ice cream dripping onto your fingers. Shoulda had the sundae or maybe the tornado or…
Great spot, the Whippy Dip.
What’s your favorite home-grown place to stop for an ice cream treat? And what do you order?
FYI: Look for more stories from Decorah and other northeastern Iowa communities which my husband and I visited last week while vacationing. Yes, this Minnesotan is admitting that she vacationed in Iowa. And loved it.

$1.50 – you can’t beat that; even if some did melt and not go the way of your mouth 🙂 Can’t wait to see the rest of what you found in IA on your vacation.
Yes, the price of the cone was great.
We loved our journey into northeastern Iowa. Historical architecture truly defines the bulk of what we saw. And we really enjoyed the slow, unhurried pace of the river towns we visited. Definitely a great nearby mini-vacation. I’m working on sorting through photos and pulling together posts.
i just knew you would love Decorah!!! I am so glad you went there and I am anxious to see all your pictures!!! I loved the name of The Whippy Dip!!! We didn’t stop there but maybe next time……
These quaint places just seem to draw me in…
I think EVERY teen in the area has worked there at one time or another…..kind of a status/must-do thing for the younger Decorah residents!! I love, love, love that town! The yarn shop is awesome! The Vesterheim Museum is beyond incredible for Norwegian history, I/we have been there so many times and never fail to see/learn something new each time. The “Chick Hatchery” has wonderful outdoor wear at great prices (and, yes, you actually can order/pick up your chicks there!!!). Wonderful post!!!! Hugs…….
We didn’t see the yarn shop, the Vesterheim Museum or the Chick Hatchery. Another time, another trip. But we saw plenty of other attractions that we enjoyed. Love Decorah. Many photos will be forthcoming after I sort through images and pull everything together into posts.
That’s the marvelous thing about such trips…..it’s the “tip of the iceberg” that keeps you coming back for more discoveries! I canNOT wait to see the rest of your photos!
Doreen, did I tell you that we drove right through Houston late Wednesday afternoon? Of course, wouldn’t you know that we did not have cell phone service in your region. So I could not call you to ask if we could stop in. The route was not planned in advance. Just tell me you were not home so I don’t feel quite as bad about not stopping.
I think we will definitely return to Decorah.
OK……we weren’t home. Really! We were down at the river since that morning and didn’t come home til late Sunday eve. You must have AT&T service(?) for your cell. This is definitely Verizon territory and they don’t like AT&T at all!! It’s a total “dead zone” for that server!! Ugh!
Exactly where I thought you would be on the day before the Fourth. We have T-Mobile, which draws from the same towers as AT & T, so I’ve been told. Yes, our coverage is not very good in many, many areas. B/n Faribault and Northfield on the back county road, coverage is sporadic. Likewise in the southwestern part of the state, with zero coverage in my hometown. Verizon may be the way for us to go; and you’re not the only one to say that.
We have been very pleased with Verizon. Consumer Reports rates them as a bit pricier but providing excellent service and I definitely agree. Many have switched from AT&T because of the many dead zones they have encountered!! If that becomes an issue, it really is time for a change otherwise the question becomes….why do I have a cell phone??!!
True. It was the lower cost that kept us with T-Mobile. But how useful can the phone be when you cannot rely on it for coverage.
Sad but true!
I have an Aunt & Uncle in Decorah, but really haven’t made it to town much, I do love the name of this ice cream shop! We favor the good ole DQ here in Rochester, I love the vanilla cone sprinkled with the crunch coat, mmmm mmmm good. I was hoping to see a picture of you trying to eat your drippy cone 🙂
Oh, I know better than to hand my camera over to Randy. Remember, he once shot a pic of me exiting a porta potty next to a cornfield.
You MUST explore Decorah. The historic architecture, the natural beauty…love it. Once I show you all we saw, you’ll be phoning your relatives for a visit.
You would have had to eat that standing with your head upside down! Glad it is hot at last so you can enjoy a melting ice cream.. c
Now that would have been hilarious. And you are right. Finally, weather warm enough to enjoy an ice cream cone. Actually, the weather during our vacation was perfect.
What a Great Place – thanks so much for sharing – Great Photos! I have a dairy intolerance, so for a cool treat I head to my own freezer for a frozen popsicle:) Happy Tuesday
I cannot imagine not being able to eat dairy products. That would be tough.
We love The Whippy Dip! Just there a few weeks ago. Such a fun spot.
And obviously loved by many given the lines.
The places you find! This one looks deeeeeeee-licious. 🙂 Hope you’re having a wonderful, adventure-filled summer, Audrey!
The Whippy Dip was easy to find right along a main highway, long lines of people… I am having a wonderful, albeit busy, summer. I know you are enjoying your time with the new babe.
