Portrait #34: Kaleb, age 5 ½
All week I’ve photographed sweet faces like Kaleb’s. Through my Canon viewfinder, I’ve seen the smiles, the excitement, the genuine joy expressed by some 50 students attending Vacation Bible School at my church, Trinity Lutheran in Faribault.
It’s been a good week. Monday – Thursday I’ve volunteered two hours each evening to capture moments. One thousand images imprinted on my CF card. Hours of work the next morning sorting through and editing photos.
But what a blessing to have done this, to have relived my own wonderful experience with VBS (although mine was quite different), to witness the exuberance and energy of youth, to work side-by-side with other adults, to share our joy in Christ.
I look at the sweet face of Kaleb and hope this 5 ½-year-old will always remember fragments of his week at VBS—arts and crafts, chasing bubbles on the church grounds, raising his arms in praise, munching a warm-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookie…
It’s been a good week with a great group of VBS kids.

You really have an eye for faces. You capture their character so well.
Thank you, Greg.
Ahhhhh…..the sweet memories…………………….
Yes. Sweet. Memories.
He is going to take the world by storm – Great Capture! I have to say I am fond of the 4 to 6 year old set. They are so open to their worlds – so stinkin smart, funnier than funny, creative, expressive, full of joy and promise, etc. 🙂
Happy Weekend – Enjoy!
I agree. I saw all of those this week. And energy, oh, the energy.
I forgot about all that energy! Did you happen to absorb some or bottle it???
By the time VBS ended last evening, I was exhausted. Running around for two hours in and out of the building and all over taking photos was a lot of work. Fun. But a lot of work.
Time for some much needed R&R then to recharge your batteries 🙂
I just finished processing all of the images from last evening’s VBS. Now onto the next project. No time for rest until Saturday afternoon.
You are wearing me out just reading that – ha!
What a sweet child. I have very fond memories of VBS. It’s funny how some things stick with you over the years and some don’t.
I’m with you. VBS was a lot of fun.
I love this photo. He’s really cute. I remember years ago when my kids would go to VBS and bring home treasures to save for a lifetime.
He looks just like his dad, who is the same age as my eldest daughter.

The pix I took start on August 4.
What a a fun week. VBS is exhausting but so much fun! I have always loved being a part of them where we have lived. Caleb is adorable.
It was fun week for the kids, and us adults, too. Yes, Kaleb is adorable.
Memories for sure. I am baking cookies (Grandma’s recipe-Farmer’s Guide-old periodical). The recipe box was the last VBS craft item I did as a 6th grader. It is a perfect size for a 3×5 file box.
I am impressed that you are still using the recipe box you made for VBS. Oh, the memories…
Such a sweet face to capture, and how fun for you doing the very thing you love to do, photograph people (and places). I will be sitting in the Snack shop this coming week for our VBS. I had to have a job that didn’t require walking, so I will sit and hand out snacks 🙂
And I’m sure you will greet each kid with a big smile. Photography next year, right?
That’s the key, to get volunteers in positions where their talents lie.
With all these images you took I hope you created a bulletin of VBS students. Did you bring a picture of your Caleb to show Kaleb?
A slideshow was presented after church services this weekend. But that features only a small snippet of the 35 – 40 images I selected for each day from the hundreds taken daily. I like your idea of creating something printed. Maybe we can do this and send thank yous to the families of those who attended. Thanks for the prompt.
Some of my photos are on the Trinity Facebook page at this link: https://www.facebook.com/Trinityfaribault
