IN CONSIDERING AMERICA’S 249th BIRTHDAY, I decided to write down words that immediately popped into my mind relating to this holiday, America and the current state of our country. I limited myself to 20 individual words or phrases. Here’s what flowed from my brain to pen to paper before I typed this list into my computer for you to read:
freedom
democracy
liberty
voting rights
free and fair elections
divisiveness
fear
deportations
due process
freedom of speech
freedom of the press
protests
my voice
threats
intimidation
injustice
checks and balances
life
melting pot
history
I could easily take each word or phrase and expound on how I feel about these topics in current-day America. But for today, I will allow the words to mostly stand alone while you ponder their meaning or create a list of your own. I will only state that I am saddened some of these words found their way into my brain as I think about our country on its 249th birthday. What words would be on your list?

yes, I feel torn on this day as well, my heart is straddling between joy and pride in our country along with worry for it’s future. I choose to remain hopeful and steadfast in my faith that justice and freedom will prevail in the end, but I also know many will suffer in the process and that makes me sad. none of this had to happen.
today, I’ll be walking in our city’s parade, handing out candy to children, while standing strong in tradition and symbolism for what our country stands for, hoping it offer all people a bit of joy, hope and strength on this day that they can carry forward into the challenging days ahead.
You’re right. None of this had to happen. And, yes, hope and joy must remain in our hearts as we move through the difficult days ahead.
Audrey, great list you have complied and yes they are all words to ponder on this 4th.

We went to the No. Morristown celebration to see family, wonderful to see it’s still providing good fun. 132 yrs. In our day, us kids were the entertainment!
Happy 4th to your family, Audrey, it is a time like no other.
We were there for a bit in the afternoon. To listen to Monroe Crossing and then to eat some of the delicious food. Unfortunately, pie choices were limited to pumpkin and vinegar when we were there. Randy tried vinegar (not a fav) and I ate some of his. I’m glad you got to North Morristown to see family.
