The gifts of the daffodil March 21, 2012

The clutch of daffodils now blooming in my front yard flower bed.

NOTHING COMPARES to the daffodil. Bright. Cheery. A burst of brilliance in a dreary landscape of muted browns and grays.

Like an island in the vast sea or an oasis in the desolate desert, the daffodil provides a welcome respite for the winter weary sojourner’s eyes.

She holds the promise of spring unfurling in her petals, of sunshine-filled days ahead, of the earth erupting in new growth.

She causes me to smile and think of May baskets woven from construction paper and jumping rope and leg-kicking toward the sky upon a weathered board swing.

Simply put, the daffodil makes me happy.

  1. This made me smile. Thanks. -kate

  2. Love it. You are WAY ahead of us on the other edge of the state – no daffs or anything else yet…though there are leaf buds on my maple tree! Horray! Beautiful picture.

No wonder my mom, who lives in sw MN, sounded a bit puzzled when I told her on Sunday that my crocuses were nearly done blooming.

Today is the first full day of spring! If you follow Ember Days today’s weather should help foretell this springs weather, tomorrow will be summer, the next day fall, and the day after winter. It’s always fun to watch and see how close they come.

Interesting. I’ll take note and see what the year ahead holds for us in terms of weather.

What a beautiful image and I totally agree with you – daffodils are really beautiful and give such lovely colour that speaks of Spring. xx

  6. The daffodil makes me happy, too. I love watching them poke up into spring, especially through the snow. Our youngest daughter has been having so much fun with them this week. Her favorite color is yellow and she loves all things pretty. She has a little vase of daffodils in her room, her request.

I was tempted, too, to pick and bring some daffodils inside. I love that your youngest has some in her room.
