Seriously, beer for breakfast? October 25, 2012

SITTING IN THE RECLINER the other night perusing a coupon book recently inserted in my local newspaper, the Faribault Daily News, I came upon this deal from L & M Bar & Grill in downtown Dundas, just south of Northfield:

I taped the word “VOID” across this coupon so you cannot use it.

I turned to my husband, informed him of the beer deal and said something like, “Can you believe this?/They must have made a mistake./Are you kidding, beer for breakfast?”

Breakfast is served at L& M from 7 – 11 a.m. Monday – Saturday and from 8:30 – 11 a.m. on Sunday.

What’s your take on this coupon, this offer of free beer with purchase of breakfast?

You know, I’m all for a savory breakfast–I just ate leftover Chinese this morning–but beer? No.

Not surprising…….for one thing it’s in Dundas (am familiar with that town), and if you eat breakfast, or are in a bar, during those hours there are many serving Bloody Marys which most often come with a beer chaser. Just sayin’……….

Well, that’s how much I frequent a bar in the a.m. Never thought of the Bloody Marys with chasers. But you may be right in thinking that’s part of the reasoning behind this offer. And, ah, yes, you do know Dundas, don’t you?

I dont drink beer, but if I did I’m pretty certain it wouldnt be for breakfast!. I do love a fizzy diet coke with my (restaurant) breakfast though, so I’m wondering if a Beer isnt that much different ?

  4. Back in college, if we were trying to be “dignified,” we didn’t drink until noon.

So then this beer for breakfast deal would be just a little too early even for college students.

Is there a factory with a third shift in Dundas? Perhaps there are workers who go out after their shift and like beer with their breakfast? I have a niece who is an RN, works overnight and sometimes goes out for wine with her coworkers after their shift. Personally, if the coupon were for a mimosa… 🙂

    • Audrey Kletscher Helbling's avatar Audrey Kletscher Helbling Says:

I did think of the shift thing. Dundas doesn’t have any factories, as far as I know. But Northfield does and the two are right next to one another, boundaries touching.

The only way this would seem logical is if one was up all night drinking and wanted to continue the festivities the next morning. In which case, breakfast and the continued use of alcohol would be craved and this would be perfect for that person. I give kudos to whoever can continuously do that and not have liver failure early in life. Life in Dundas seems pretty interesting. I still can’t think of a beer that I would enjoy with my pancakes, biscuits & gravy, and bacon at 8am…

Thanks for adding more interesting thoughts to the discussion, thoughts I also thought.

As for Dundas, I don’t want to give the wrong impression here and put a bad face on this community. I know some really great people from Dundas and actually think it would be a wonderful small town in which to live, especially given its proximity to Northfield.

On the other hand, it is known for its bars and as a place where college students hang out.

  7. Nothing better than beer and eggs, right! Maybe some bacon. Hey its FREE! Happy Thursday:)

I can understand Bloody Marys or screwdrivers (the juice factor) and beer could possibly be in the grain category (barley). However, beer on Cheerios or Wheaties doesn’t sound appealing to me and would not rate as the breakfast of champions.

But you can’t say you drank all day unless you get started in the morning.

  9. I would seriously consider having a beer for breakfast. Maybe a nice dry stout; dark and roasty like coffee, and they’re typically only 3.5% ABV or so. Or then again, maybe a Rogue Maple Bacon Ale would be more like it. http://rogue.com/beers/voodoo-bacon-maple.php
I feel a trip to Dundas coming on…

Now you’re talkin. Welcome to Minnesota. I was just in Zumbrota last Friday evening to read my poem at the “It’s All One Water” reception. You’re about an hour’s drive from Dundas. But hey, you don’t have a coupon, do you?

Free beer! I have never heard about it, but now I believe. 🙂

Here’s another free story for you. Many, many years ago, my husband and I were on our way to his parents’ home in central Minnesota for a weekend visit. We got caught in a parade in a very small town. Atop one of the units was a keg of beer. They were giving away free beer. And come to think of it, I believe the time of day was, ummmmm, morning.

Who says breakfast has to be eaten in the A.M.?

    • Audrey Kletscher Helbling's avatar Audrey Kletscher Helbling Says:

You are right. Breakfast does not need to be eaten in the a.m. However, L & M serves breakfast only until 11 a.m. So if you want to eat breakfast there and redeem that “free beer with breakfast” coupon, you have to eat breakfast in the a.m.

  12. I hate beer even more than I hate sauerkraut. 🙂
