WE STOOD ALONG THE EDGE of the gravel road Saturday evening, my 13-year-old nephew and I, mesmerized by the glorious golden sun pinking the sky above and below a layer of blue grey.
I raised my camera. He lifted his phone. We snapped several photos, compared, wished for better zooms to photograph the prairie sky north of Lamberton in southwestern Minnesota.
“It’s what I miss most about this place, the sunrise and the sunset,” I said.
“And the stars,” Stephen added.
Sun and stars.
He was right. The stars, too.

Hi Audrey,
Beautiful pictures! I agree that we live in a wonderful place to see the sun, moon and stars.
The other night the Harvest Moon looked like it was just above the tree tops and was huge
and so bright. I know they see it in the city but it just seems so much more clear in the
country. I guess I am prejudiced!!!!
I love to open your blog every day…it is like opening a Christmas package..a surprise!
I always take my laptop and sit in an easy chair when I open and read it. Love it.
DeLores
DeLores, you are so sweet. I’m glad you enjoy my Minnesota Prairie Roots blog. I love sharing my stories and photos with readers like you. I’ll be back to the prairie several more times this summer, so you can look for more images from your area in upcoming weeks.
Beautiful, and I love the little bird on the fence post in the first photo….the sunset was especially beautiful last night, I had my camera out too 🙂
You know, I did not even notice the bird until I downloaded the pix into my computer. I was so focused on that sun.
Audrey,
I hope I see you when you are in our area!!
DeLores
It would be nice to meet you sometime, too. But our next trips out there are packed with family events.
I was just noticing the sunset tonight…..gorgeous!! I love country living!
You are so lucky to live in the country. I wish I still lived in the country.
Even when I/we lived in the Metro area I think we were really “country folk”deep down we just hadn’t “arrived there” yet!!!!
It seems that way to me.
🙂
Me too

I could’t agree more. It makes me weary to think about moving any closer to a concrete/asphault jungle. They are all ablaze with artificial light. Nature’s light fixtures are just fine. The price of gasoline, though, is making it harder and harder to commute to the city.
Even my neighborhood in Faribault has way too much artificial light. When I think about all the stars I saw as a kid and how I never notice them anymore, it makes me feel a bit melancholy.
Breathtaking & Beautiful!!!
I agree.
Great shots of sunset on the farm
I was out and about that night too. I was photographing up northwest of Marshall, MN. Ghent, Minneota, Taunton, Porter, and Canby. Found a really nice cafe with good food and some great small towns and saw a wonderful sunset as well. I was in Walnut Grove Saturday night and captured a similar sunset. It’s a nice time of year for sunsets.
Those small town cafes are the best.
And the prairie sunsets, the best, too.
Aw yes, the prairie sunsets. One of the things I have enjoyed since moving out here. I also love to feast my eyes on the clouds. No hills or mountains to minimize the view. 🙂
I am curious, Lisa. Where did you move from? Welcome to Minnesota.
Aubrey, We moved from northern California, north of San Francisco. Our town, and the neighboring towns, were surrounded by mountains creating beautiful valleys. Since we’ve moved out here, we have been in awe of the clouds and sunsets. The thunder and lightening storms have been a lot of fun too! 😀
I’ve never been to California, but, yes, definitely sounds like quite a change in the landscape. Our daughter is marrying a guy who grew up in Bakersfield, California, and lived in LA before moving here last October. He endured one of Minnesota’s worst winters ever. He hasn’t left yet…
